Viviane Michel | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

Viviane Michel
  • France
As a child, Viviane was inspired by Japanese cartoons (manga) and began to draw. This passion never leaves her and plays the role of an escape route like a diary. She studied at the Beaux-arts de Toulouse and discovered the different techniques of drawing, painting and graphic design. She then launched her career as an artist. At the same time, she teaches applied arts in high schools, animates workshops of artistic awakening in structures of reception of the early childhood and in a workshop of "art therapy". Viviane retranscribes her own stories on the canvas. She gives life to characters in the form of natural elements. Recently, she evokes a nomadic life, constantly in motion. She paints the shelters: tents, yurts, marquees, nestled in a tree or on top of a hill. However, the passage of time remains her greatest source of inspiration. She likes to represent it through her ""cloud-trees"", where each root falling down the sky is another second passed. Their leaves are transformed into hands capable of catching the passing of time. The artist calls them his "time thieves". Quite naturally, her favorite object becomes the hourglass, whose drops or grains materialize time. She can then give it different aspects. She adorns it with, playing on the ambivalence of the word time: it becomes gray, rainy, it shines, declining not only the hours but also the day and the night. These are both drawn and cut out and mixed with oil paint. She uses her own photographs in which she highlights the details of everyday life - the colors splash onto the canvas and the asphalt dirties it. Once the canvas is dry, Viviane refines it with a black pencil to underline a shape or surround a stain. She also likes the black marks caused by the engraving and when the text mixes with the image to form a typography. She wishes to transmit the desire to read and offers the possibility to her viewer to unveil the secrets of these forms. Viviane's painting oscillates between the seen and the unseen through a mixture of spontaneity and imperfection. She leaves it to the viewer to observe each detail of her compositions so that the meaning and aestheticism of each of the particles of color are revealed.
