Levêque-Vnuk Catherine | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

Levêque-Vnuk Catherine
  • France
Having graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Lyon (Rhone), where she was taught by the French painter Jean-Philippe Aubanel (twentieth-twenty-first centuries), Balthazar began her career with Eliakim (designer, twentieth century) producing textile designs and event settings. During the 90s, she created and exhibited ""ceramic paintings"" on which she applied collages and pigments. After a break, the Rhone artist decided to devote herself to art, and in 2010 she started new work of painting on canvas, again based on collages.\n Balthazar’s work is based on the concept of superposition of memories. She refers to her own memories, but also the collective memory. Each of her works is a territory composed of paint, images, words and dates. Space is architected clearly and geometrically in order to give free rein to impressions. Sensitive to all kinds of travel: in time, in space and in spirituality, the artist evolves in a personal world where she repositions the cardinal points.\n Her collages use her own photographs, which she combines with new and old magazines cuttings. This technique allows her to establish a dialogue between eras. She fits the past with the present and thus mixes classical pictorial tradition with a contemporary visual environment. She also evokes the world of memory of by engraving her thoughts in the medium, much as children carve their initials in a tree trunk. Her texts, of mysterious and indecipherable writing, are indeed meaningful. Speaking first to the soul, they try to recall that which had been forgotten.
