Claudio Giulanelli | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

Claudio Giulanelli
  • Italy
Claudio grew up in Rome in the artistic atmosphere of the Eternal City. In this context he became fascinated with the great classical masters of the Italian Renaissance. He began by buying engravings of famous works and practiced copying them. He studied the structure in all its details. He turned to the study of art history and painting techniques. At that time, a book on Caravaggio and the Flemish painters accompanied him in his daily life and these painters became his references. He travelled throughout Europe to discover the original works of his Masters in the museums. He joined artists' studios in Rome such as those of Delfo Previtali and Guido Razzi to perfect his pictorial style. After these different stages of learning, he decided to dedicate himself to painting. Claudio painted a reinvented and imagined Middle Ages. The Woman is the main and recurring subject of his work as a representation of the beauty of nature and the perfection of forms. For him, she represents the inner self, what is beautiful in every human being. These female figures are always represented in a light movement, ready to leave the canvas. Claudio begins by covering his canvas with a dark tempera (a specific paint whose pigments are linked by glues). He then let himself be carried away by inspiration and drew shapes (circles, ellipses) with yellow paint without any precise representation. Little by little, these forms inspire him the structure of the subject (the oval of a face, of a mask). Then he covers the canvas with a patina to isolate the tempera from the oil paint. He can then paint the colors and give life to his painting. Claudio's work is remarkable both for its quality and its deep meaning. Each character has a spiritual symbolic value. His work is an alchemy of reality and imagination, dream and mysticism, memory and symbolism. His painting carries a timeless and universal light.
