Iris Mossar | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

Iris Mossar
  • France
Iris began exhibiting her work while still a student at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. She found her artistic style by doing serigraphy (printing technique on different supports) and developed a taste for the juxtaposition of graphics. She hijacks the initial medium and superimposes several elements (images, texts or flat areas of color) to give depth and dynamism. Photography is the basis of her pictorial work. Over the years, she has developed a technique that mixes photography, collage, silk-screening and oil painting.Iris' style plays on the ambiguity between photography and painting. Her paintings always begin with a journey and photos. During her travels (Japan, China, Argentina, United States, Canada, Thailand, Cambodia, Sri Lanka) she travels through cities, focusing on urban areas known as "backward", semi-industrial or desolate districts. Abandonment has always been one of her favorite subjects.\nOn her return to France, she selects a series of images, prints them in large format and maroons them on canvas. Then, she deteriorates the initial image by covering it with paint, dirtying it with an opaque veil. She works essentially by superimposed layers of glaze in order to give a varnished rendering. The gesture is very important in Iris' work. Her paintings evolve on the ground where she lets the chance and the error occur. For a more refined work, she also installs her easel. Adventure has always been the driving force of her artistic research. She feels a need for freedom which pushes her to take the road. Alone in her excursions, she likes the state of mind in which she finds herself: the predisposition to absorb everything that surrounds her. In this process, she stores and creates a repertoire of images close to a diary. It is also an exercise where she measures herself and her own convictions.
