Sophie Gerard | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

Sophie Gerard
  • France
Sophie spent her childhood in the Loire Valley region of France. She grew up in a family that was appreciative of the artistic world and discovered art during family trips. At the age of 12, she discovered and was fascinated by the painting ""Spring"" by Botticelli during a visit to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence (Italy). As a teenager, she was passionate about the works of the Austrian painter, Friedrich Hundertwasser (twentieth century). His treatment of colour and his relationship with nature fascinated her, and he became an important painter for her.\n In high school, Sophie began to participate in art exhibitions and attended the School of Fine Arts. After graduating, she carried out her dreams of travelling to South America. For a year she soaked in landscapes, colours, warmth and then finally decided to stay and live in Chile for 3 years. On her return to France in 2011, she decided to set up her studio in Mayenne (Loire Valley).\n Sophie's work draws its energy from an increasingly individualistic and sclerotic society. Nature is in danger, and all that is natural and all that is artificial are contradictory. She combines different materials (ink, acrylic and collage), which reveal a thin and delicate line, as well as a profusion of details.\n Her work, between washes (diluted colours create different intensities) and collage (newspapers, bits of magazines, fabrics.....) approaches different issues. Women, nature, travel, and loneliness, but also chi l d r e n a r e s u b j e c t s d e a r t o t h e a r t i s t . \n C o m p a r a b l e t o t h e S p a n i s h p a i n t i n g o f t h e t w e n t i e t h c e n t u r y ( J o a n M i r Ì , P a b l o P i c a s s o ) , a n d t h e c o l o u r i s t p a i n t e r s s u c h a s H e n r i M a t i s s e , W a s s i l y K a n d i n s k y a n d M a r c C h a g a l l ( n i n e t e e n t h / t w e n t i e t h c e n t u r i e s ) , S o p h i e attaches great importance to colour, which arouses emotions and participates in the structure of the painting. Vivid and saturated hues accentuate the surrealist dimension of her painting. We discover there a floating world, dreamlike and wacky, sometimes disturbing, where strangeness mixes with a sense of humour.
