Characteristics of the animal painting

An animal painting is easily recognizable: it is figurative, since it is possible to identify,
at least one animal. It can be a pet, like a dog or a cat, or a domestic animal, like a horse or a dog.
a domestic animal, such as a horse or farm animal, or a wild animal. Any species from the fauna can be represented. The possibility of composition is therefore immense.
Nevertheless, animal painting only became a genre in its own right in modern times.
Before that, although animals were depicted in paintings, they were almost never the central subject of the picture.

For a long time, paintings of animals were made using the oil painting technique. But with the advent of acrylics, most paintings are made with this medium. The elaboration of an animal painting goes through an essential preparatory phase: that of the drawing and the sketch. Many animal drawings can therefore be found throughout history, especially for classical art education, since animal postures and expressions are excellent training for any art education.

History of animal painting

Animal painting is ancient. As early as prehistoric times, in cave art, we find representations of animals in caves (the Chauvet cave or the Lascaux cave, for example). Antiquity also used animals as subjects: it represented animals that were familiar or mythological. The Middle Ages reproduced animals that are present in the Bible. We find, among others, representations of sheep, horses, dogs, foxes and birds. At the same time, a large fantasy bestiary developed.

Later, during the Renaissance and classical periods, the horse often appears in paintings. Like the dog, it is an animal that is very close to man in this period. Hunting painting also provided an opportunity to paint dogs and game with meticulous realism. While the animal is often the primary subject of a sculpture, the same cannot be said of a painting. Before the 20th century and the rise of animal painting, few painters painted portraits of animals.

Famous animal paintings

One of the most famous animal paintings is Piero di Cosimo's The Forest Fire (1515). The early 16th-century tapestries of the Lady with the Unicorn are an essential part of art history. At the same time, we find the Rhinoceros (1515) engraved by Dürer, or the Dogfight by Franck Snyders. Gauguin's famous White Horse (1898) is also remembered. In the 20th century, among the most famous, we come across Picasso and his numerous representations of birds and bulls, or Foujita and his immoderate love of cats of which he made portraits.

At Carré d'artistes, discover animal paintings by contemporary artists such as
Anne R , Hervé Maury , Raphaële Lennoz , Moogly , and many others.
