Mademoiselle Berthelot | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

Mademoiselle Berthelot defines herself as a “DIY” artist. As a collector of multiple objects she has found and recovered, press cuttings, texts and quotations, all types of paper, pencils, paintbrushes and stencils, the artist embraces her creativity with her entire playful and poetic dimension. \n Adding techniques, superimposing materials and juggling between different supports, either in the streets or in her workshop, she develops with abundance and offers a multitude of collage practices, allowing her to bring together shapes and words, colours and messages. Having been influenced by street art and the cartoon aesthetic from the beginning, the artist explores the repetitive character of the form by using stamps or stencils in her large, often funny and off the wall speech bubbles.\n Having in the past collected symbols, archetypes and references put into the perspective with the enlightenment of our time, Mademoiselle Berthelot intends to evade the signs. Working with old press cuttings, the artist is interested in the evolution of morals, notably through the female figure. In trying to rejuvenate the image of the housewife created by advertising and literature of the period, she develops a retro-futurist aesthetic, showcasing everything while mocking the progress of another time.\n These backwards and forwards between the past, present and future with the increase in speech bubbles, their echo and repetition, reveal an even greater project, a more intergenerational desire: the need to travel, to escape, the constant need for something new.
