Nelleke Smit France
The faces, bodies and landscapes of the painter Nelleke Smit mix, in a whirlwind of colors, sunlight and floral motifs, in explosive, intense and warm compositions. Self-taught, the artist has trained herself in the exercise of matter and nuances, handling in turn pastel pencils, watercolor or gouache. But it is acrylic and oil paint, allowing a subtle variation of gradations and contours, that she definitively chooses in her work. Originally working on wallpaper, then later on canvas and wood, Nelleke Smit considers each project as an experiment, an exercise, a test page that comes to satisfy by illustrating an emotion or a sensation. Shapes, silhouettes, shadows, her testimonies are subjective translations, impressions that she recomposes from reality. Landscapes or portraits become the subjects of a sensitive distortion, of a new look that decomposes then recreates through the surreal prism of the artist.ìInscribing her work in a fleeting and elusive time, Nelleke Smit realizes her paintings quickly and in one go. Forbidding herself any return to the past and any attempt to rationalize the gesture, she practices an experience of time that excludes any digestion, any reflection and privileges pure sensation. "I don't think about the colors. They come almost by themselves, I think in light and dark tones" says the artist. The painter claims no artistic paternity and no reference to any current or group. Her garden, her interior world are the engines of a rich palette, instrument of a pure emotional mechanics.
