WHAT IS STREET ART ?

The birth of street art : Two theories

The goal was above all to be able to transmit religious, political or personal messages. It is a real means of expression that has just been born to pass information, to make people react and especially to think about the mentalities on the space that surrounds us. The street art gathers all the forms of art realized in urban environment, streets or public spaces.

Street artists use different types of techniques such as graffiti (Mr. Chat), collages (Banksy, Ernest Pignon Ernest), stencils (Jef Aerosol, Miss. Tic), molding (Gregos), mosaics (Invader), stickers (Obey), frescoes and giant portraits (JR, Keith Haring) or installations (Mentalgassi).

It is a committed ephemeral art made available to the general public. An art which is at the same time strong by its message and its political positioning but also in the same time fragile by its setting in exposure. It is discovered and disappears with the hazards of time (bad weather, theft, untimely cleaning of the city ...).

It is in the 70s inside the New York subway that the graffiti was born. The tags are at the base of signatures which are in the right line of the parietal art. The artists make themselves known by their style, their graphic codes. The street-art knew a lightning success covering trains, subways and cars of all colors and various illustrative styles.

Street art, a contemporary art inspired by past traditions

The stencil technique is a process of reproduction of drawings, signs, logos, very impactful. This graphic medium has been used in typography since the beginning of the 12th century. The artist cuts in a rigid support (wood, cardboard, plastic, metal) then draws or transfers an illustrative motif.

Then, he chooses a space, a place and reproduces his motif with spray paint or aerosol. The same drawing can thus be reproduced hundreds of times in different places. In some capitals like Berlin or Lisbon, it becomes a real treasure hunt to find the works of the same artist exposed at each street corner. Street-art paintings are also made with stencils, brushes, ballpoint pens or sponges.

The 80's

Faced with this resounding craze, the authorities tried in the early 80s to sanction graffiti artists. This had the direct effect of developing the art of graffiti and extending it to all major cities. All street-art artists want to highlight the freedom of expression. Jean-Michel Basquiat had a dazzling success with his paintings inspired by graffiti and street art. In the early 1980s, graffiti art was popular in Europe and began to enter art galleries.

When the Berlin Wall was destroyed in 1989, it was covered with slogans, stencils, drawings and paintings. It goes around the world. Street art becomes a real open-air forum for artists. The advertising world tries to seize it to energize its campaigns and speak to the greatest number. The street-art painting has the wind in its sails.

The years of consecration

After years of prohibition, street art has managed to open the doors of the art market. Artists like Ernest Pignon Ernest, JR or Banksy have exhibitions dedicated to them. Commissions are given to JR for monumental installations, notably to cover the Pantheon in Paris. We create monographic exhibitions in honor of the painter Ernest Pignon Ernest. The street art of Banksy impulse a resounding buzz at the time of an auction by making self-destruct his work remotely after this one was sold at high price.

the street art today

Street Art, once considered a marginal form of expression, now occupies a central place in the urban and artistic culture of major cities. Metropolises such as Paris and Marseille have become veritable open-air museums, where Street Art works flourish on the facades of buildings and the walls of emblematic districts.

Street Art in Paris has notably developed in areas such as the 13th arrondissement of Paris, Belleville and the Marais, where local and international artists compete creatively to transform urban space into a place for artistic dialogue.
Similarly, street art in Marseille flourishes in neighborhoods such as Cours Julien, Panier and Friche la Belle de Mai, reflecting the cosmopolitan identity and creative energy of the Phocaean city.

By embracing urban art, these two cities have succeeded in creating an environment conducive to the emergence of new talent, while offering a unique and inspiring setting for residents and visitors. Thus, Street Art has become a real cultural and touristic asset for big cities like Paris and Marseille.
