HISTORY OF LANDSCAPE PAINTING

Landscape painting is a figurative representation of the landscape. It can be combined with other symbolic or narrative elements. It can be found in the miniatures of the Middle Ages in the West, in the ancient Roman world, in Indian painting as well as in the Persian miniature.

Landscape painting : Eras and painters

In the Middle Ages, the landscape reveals notions of organization of space. Little by little, new perspectives are born and reveal scenes of daily life like the very rich hours of the Duke of Berry.

The painted landscape takes a real importance in the Renaissance with mainly religious or mythological subjects. The love of landscape develops in contact with pictorial art and the new developments of the modern era.

The birth of landscape is subject to a compromise, in situ - the attention of the landscape painter and in visu - the vision of the painter. This compromise is slow, complex and difficult to reconstruct, but it is always essential. In ancient Greece and Rome, the landscape intervenes as a background intended to put forward a main scene. The "topia" or landscape scheme was established in the Roman imperial period.

In the 17th century, even if the landscape is not recognized academically, it is strongly represented in the works of Rubens or Nicolas Poussin. In the XIXth century, the interior landscape is put forward by the Romantics with more or less oriental tendencies. The 20th century was marked by a new wave of landscape painting with the launch of the Land Art movement.

Attached to the landscapes of the Atlantic coast Edward Hopper painted them and gives rise to contradictory interpretations notably he represents a scene in the 1880s.

William Turner and Caspar David Friedrich are in a register of landscape nature tortured and represent emotions in a pure state in their paintings.

The impressionism of Claude Monet at the end of the 19th century accomplished a true revolution in the practice of landscape painting. It marks a decisive turning point in the history of landscape paintings because it plays on the effects of light, and emphasizes the accuracy of nature through its features and remains faithful to the model, ie the landscape itself.

Vincent van Gogh: The Starry Night is probably the best known of his famous landscape paintings!  It was in 1888 when he moved to Arles that he painted a soft starry night conducive to his reverie, some of the plastic elements of this landscape illustrate well his pathology: sharp lines, hellish spirals, very contrasting colors ....

Nicolas de Staël (1914-1955) appropriated landscape painting in a completely different way than the artists studied so far.

He proposes a more realistic painting, his works question the opposition between abstraction and figuration.  Allowing himself freedom in the representation of reality, he stages the landscapes of Sicily which he fell under the spell of during his trip to Italy in 1953.
Gerhard Richter's painting has the same kind of intellectual relationship with the landscape as a pictorial genre.

THE LANDSCAPE AS THE MAIN SUBJECT

According to art critics, the Antwerp painter Joachim Patinier is the creator of the landscape as a genre. The contemporary artist Dürer defined him as "the good painter of landscapes", knowing that he himself was the first whose works designated watercolors and gouaches as landscapes. In this perspective, the Venice lagoon painted by Giovanni Bellini combines oil painting with superficial layers of glaze. This reduces the emphasis on architecture and focuses on contemporary landscape painting.

During the Renaissance, many painters expressed urban myths through landscape. The Florence planning project is a good example. It reveals the ideal urban landscape painting. In addition, Flemish painting shows representations of interior scenes through window frames. Later on, they will take on larger dimensions until they occupy the surface of the canvas as in Giorgione's Storm.

Modern landscape painting offers a multitude of possibilities for artistic expression, ranging from total abstraction to figurative representation. Contemporary artists have rethought the traditional conventions of landscape painting, exploring new techniques.

Today, landscape painting is very popular in wall decorating because it brings a touch of nature and serenity to any room. Landscape paintings can evoke memories of travel, quiet moments in nature or simply scenes of natural beauty. The vibrant colors and meticulous details of landscape painting create a striking visual effect that can bring an otherwise monotonous wall to life.

The different techniques of landscape painting

Landscape painting offers unlimited possibilities and varies according to the period in which it comes to life. The painter can opt for a nature painting. As such, he represents the painting nature for what it is. Alternatively, he may choose to paint the landscape as a simple setting, revealing a scene of life.

A great diversity of techniques

All the techniques used in painting can be used to paint landscapes. If some come from a tradition, others are quite recent. Acrylic paint is one of them and uses pigments associated with synthetic resin. It dries very quickly and thus allows to paint works in a short time. Watercolor, on the other hand, is a painting technique that uses fine, ground pigments assembled with water. The blurred and watery rendering allows to paint more vaporous and romantic landscapes.

The painter can also choose to use the following techniques for their special characteristics. Gouache, unlike watercolor, is an opaque and covering water-based paint. Oil is a painting technique based on drying oil and pigments. Dripping is an application technique that relies on "letting it drip". Lacquer is a resin that comes from latex. As it dries, it forms a protective barrier on the painting.

The landscape painters at Carré d'artistes

Mountains, cliffs, forests, rivers, fields, the sea, cities, architecture... These are all places that have helped inspire our artists. Each painter has his own technique of landscape painting. Landscape paintings mixing abstract, realistic and poetic styles will parade before your eyes.

Alain Héraud is one of those painters who create nature paintings referring to the sea. The artist's inventive works are bursting with light and evoke a peaceful atmosphere, conducive to calm and rest. His paintings take the viewer to imaginary cities or turquoise seas.

The photographs that Franz Alias uses as raw material for his works are printed on Japanese paper. This technique reinforces the artisanal touch of his work. His landscape paintings are made from Indian ink, acrylic and spray paint.

Timeless, they seem to come from another time. The artist uses different techniques that embellish any imperfection that surrounds us. Let your imagination run wild through the collection of landscape paintings, paintings and paintings made by Carré d'artistes' painters.
