Roger Abate
  • France
Adopted by Marseille where he lives and works, Roger has been a painter and visual artist for about thirty years. Liking to get out of the studio, he also carries out numerous performances in urban or festive contexts as different as the metro, the Avignon festival (with a theatre company) or the Five Continents jazz festival (Marseille). His involvement in the life of the Phocaean city leads him to carry out interventions in artistic expression workshops in schools (high schools and colleges), hospitals (sick children) or therapeutic settings (adult residents).\For Roger, painting is both a physical necessity - the desire to handle brushes, paintbrushes and spatulas - and a spiritual necessity - the temptation to manage, to orchestrate the staging of signs, elements and silhouettes... The plastic universe, the graphic imagination of his compositions is an astonishing combination of different figures and signs (word, letter, graffiti, symbol). Lines contours, profiles, drawn shadows recreate, in the middle of erasures, scratches and other notches or incisions, a singular world whose meaning cannot be formulated through a simple narration. And this in spite of sometimes an impression of typographical courses. He conceives it more as the expression of new languages, of discoveries without constraint left to the free interpretation of each one.\nHis paintings are thus the meeting of concrete elements and imaginary graphic messages where forms-symbols and allusive figures mix, interpenetrate and answer each other. His work is often built on the basis of the black-white-gray triptych on which he introduces touches of red, yellow and blue in various tones, hard or soft. Roger's paintings compose a vast archeological site where the observer is invited to decipher and clear the motifs and other "pure" signs revealed. Through their multiple stagings or their declensions, the glance of the other is then able to recreate singular connections and to reinterpret them freely... An imaginary in constant reconstruction.
