My painting is an intimate diary, at the crossroads of the world of yesterday and today, the ancestral and the modern.
Born in the north of France, Ruysschaert is a self-taught artist with Flemish origins, who lives and works in the Vendee region. An adept at modelling and sculpting from a young age, he began painting in Paris at the start of the 1990s alongside his university studies in management. After years of research and experimentation, Ruysschaert found his true style and artistic technique in 2004 in the creation of both abstract and modern painting, which suitably unites tradition and modernity. In a permanent quest for harmony and balance between tones and shapes, the painter seeks to reach “the vital space that we have to find between matter and spirit”.
Using acrylics associated with Indian ink, rust pigments, metal and other printed supports – such as traditional Japanese, Korean or Nepalese paper and newspapers – Ruysschaert has developed an original graphic style by enabling calligraphy and geometry to communicate with each other. Influenced by architecture and feeding off of all elements produced by nature, Ruysschaert’s approach is intrinsically linked to the notions of temporality and memory. Hence, the painter chooses all of the materials he will use patiently and with minute detail, even going as far as taking chemical action on the properties of some of them, “actually accelerating their corrosion or yellowing”. Then, using different tools, he composes his canvas with a “range of superimposing [which he] unveils and hides, playing with the visible and the invisible”.
