Marie-Josée Bergeron’s practice is located at the crossroads of arts. Having graduated in Art and Art History, she developed a professional design practice at the same time. Her intuitive approach favours the encounter of techniques, the combination of colours and the fusion of materials.
Working a bit like a decorator or a fashion designer who is inspired by samples of materials and colours to put together an ensemble, Marie-Josée Bergeron mixes forms and textures, bits of fabric or pieces of paper, images taken from a magazine or personal photographs, then sticks, inserts, superimposes and recomposes them to make all of these samples the central theme of a story.
Originally developing her compositions with an ink on paper technique, the artist enjoys integrating chance into her creations. Adding drops of pure alcohol to the ink, she obtains very surprising effects. The colours achieved and the extent of the ink on the paper become random data. Orange, pink, mauve, green, pigments of new tones appear. The artist then adds texture, gel, mortar, sand as well as textile elements, paper and thus allows the forms and details to appear through the accumulation of layers.
Marie-Josée Bergeron turns the material over in all directions. The gaming atmosphere she invents becomes the pretext to the experimentation of colours. The forms and textures are intuitively worked according to a central theme governed by the laws of the imagination that engender the birth of the creation.
