Mat' | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

Mat’ (Mathilde) grew up in Provence and regularly visited various artists' studios throughout her youth. Rooted in the artistic tradition of this region, she is fond of its light and colours. The great masters such as Cezanne, Matisse and de Stael were her first loves. She left for Paris and attended the Camondo School to study Architecture and Interior Design, and finally accompanyed her husband to Buenos Aires (Argentina). There, in this completely foreign environment, she again found the key elements to her inspiration: light and the vastness of the landscape. So she devoted herself to painting, sharing a studio with seven local artists and beginning her first exhibitions. This artistic exchange enriched her and much influenced her work. Back in France, she would again find this system of artistic association that suited her and she once again shared a studio with a small group.\n Mat uses oil or acrylic and mainly applies it with a knife. At times she adds collage or charcoal work. From her time in Argentina she has kept the bright and cheerful colours, as well as the abrupt shapes of this both welcoming and wild country.\n She draws her inspiration from the great questions of life that confront her. As a mother of three, she expresses her own philosophical reflections on the canvas. Currently, she explores the theme of ""where I am, where I am going."" This journey is personal and does not oblige the viewer to hear a specific message.\n Her work is a mystery that is simultaneously hidden and apparent. Mat plays between the abstract and figurative through the magic of colour and the arrangements of shapes. Harmony, in symbiosis with force, create space. Solid white leads the eye of the observer to a small window. From there, a new dimension opens where the observer can meditate. He is invited to sail with her in her interior, on the surface of a world both real and strange. Mystery, strength and character are features of Mat’s work.
