A self-taught artist, Sigrid M. had a passion for artistic creation even as a teenager. She invented worlds through painting and collage on different media. After graduating high school, she studied communications in Paris. She worked for event agencies organising cultural events in unusual places. In 1999, she decided to devote herself to her passion and became a full time artist. She has participated in contemporary art markets and fairs in the Paris region since 2001. Located in Rueil-Malmaison, her studio is always open to visitors passing through.
The artist creates abstract compositions on paper using mixed media (acrylic, pigments, various materials...). She applies colour using a knife to overlap layers of paint. In this way she plays with transparency effects to give an impression of aging. Fascinated by colour and material, she works her paintings as if pieces of fabric. She uses Oriental batiks (carved wood stamps used for textile printing) brought back from her travels to give her work a weathered appearance.
Sigrid M. admires the masters of contemporary abstraction: Mark Rothko (American painter, twentieth century), Nicolas De Staël (French painter of Russian origin, twentieth century) and Pierre Soulages (French painter). Her style is somewhere between decorative and abstract art.
The artist has been inspired by her many trips abroad (Europe, Africa, North and South America, the Far East) in her reading and all kinds of objects unearthed here and there. Driven by a great curiosity, she loves to capture the ambiance and atmosphere. She likes deep red and the intensity of turquoise. Fabric scraps, geometric figures, symbols and floral intertwining intimately coexist in this mix of shapes and colours. Memories of a lived or imagined feeling, her joyful compositions are an invitation to escape.
