Stuart Davis: In Full Swing

June 10 – Sept 25
The Whitney Museum of American Art

A year ago, the Whitney Museum of American Art inaugurated its new downtown home and will expose through the summer one of the preeminent figures of American modernism: Stuart Davis. With a long career that stretched from the beginning of the twentieth century well into the postwar era, he brought a admirably American accent to international modernism. With approximately 100 works, from the paintings of tobacco packages and household objects of the early 20’s to the work left in his workshop at his death in 1964, In Full Swing will highlight Davis's unique talent to mix popular culture, the aesthetics of advertising and the lessons of Cubism into his work.

Street Art Tour

Art in New York is not a museum prerogative: murals, paste ups, graffiti and stencils are hidden all over the streets’ city. Because they are difficult to find on Google, you can hunt down these masterpieces with the Street Art Walk. In a 2 hours tour, you will discover a world full of eclectic and ever-changing mix of art from around the world. Former graffers like David Meade helps you understand the difference between paste-ups and stickers and brings you straight to the works themselves—like Belgian ROA’s oversize woodland creatures or the anonymous arcade-inspired Invaders mosaics—in Williamsburg and Bushwic.

Through September 4. The Met Breuer

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's modern and contemporary art program includes a new series of exhibitions and artist commissions in the landmark building designed by Marcel Breuer.
The current exhibition Unfinished enhances a recurrent problem of the artistic practice: the question of when a work of art is finished. Beginning with the Renaissance masters, this innovative exhibition reviews the term "unfinished" in its broadest possible sense, including works left unfinished by their makers, which often give insight into the process of their creation, but also those in favour of a non finito—intentionally unfinished—work. Some of history's greatest artists’ artworks are expounded, among them Titian, Rembrandt, Turner, and Cézanne.
