I don't intend to convey a particular message, I simply want to amuse and touch the audience with poetry, humour and escapism.
Originaria de Barcelona, Gemma estudió la doble licenciatura de escultura en la Facultad de Bellas Artes e ilustración en la Escuela LLotja. El hecho de tener una madre (la artista Montserrat Solé Torrens) que era pintora probablemente la guió inconscientemente en sus elecciones.
Después de graduarse, tuvo varios trabajos mientras continuaba con sus actividades artísticas. Empezó a pintar camisetas con una amiga, y lo que debería haber sido una pequeña actividad secundaria, se convirtió en una ocupación a tiempo completo durante diez años. Junto a su trabajo, recibió encargos de ilustraciones y expuso en bares y restaurantes de la capital catalana. A los treinta y cuatro años, decidió cambiar de vida. Dejó su ciudad natal y se trasladó a un pequeño pueblo de la isla de Mallorca, en las Baleares, donde se dedicó por completo a su pasión.
Gemma's works in acrylic on paper, gluing in places a few things cut here and there, from magazines or newspapers. Belgian painter René Magritte (twentieth century) and Spanish illustrators Carme Solé Vendrell and Ana Juan are among her main artistic influences.
The artist finds her inspiration in the little things of everyday life and the images that surround her. Her style is a happy mix of painting and illustration. The absurd can sometimes be felt in her colourful surrealist compositions. Through funny, comic-like scenes, Gemma hopes to sublimate reality by carrying it into her dream world.
Her stylized characters are perfectly recognizable with their large almond eyes, their mischievous flushed cheeks and long prominent noses. Tender and endearing, they are the everyday heroes of a modern fairy tale.
