Initially, there was nothing that destined Sebastian Levigne to become an artist. When it came to the choosing his studies, the young man opted for scientific training in biochemistry. But he began painting in the evenings and at the weekends. He participated in many shows at the same time that he was completing his thesis. The sea was his favourite theme (rocks, low tide, washed up buoys...). In 2003, he decided to abandon his scientific projects to embark on an artistic career. He joined the Maison d’Artistes in 2004, and today lives and works in a small town north of the Deux-Sèvres (France). He has exhibited regularly since 2005.
The birth of his daughter encouraged him to turn to a more narrative and autobiographical style of painting. From a classical figurative style, he changed to a more abstract style. He abandoned marine themes in favour of urban areas. The artist now felt the need to capture the moments shared with his child: "I paint walls on the canvas to tell stories, moments of life to keep track of the past." Sebastian Levigne is interested in the trace of man on the urban landscape. He draws his inspiration from everyday life, music and poetry.
The artist begins to paint with a harmony of defined colours. He makes use of pattern as an excuse to work the transparency of colours and material effects, using the knife to give relief to the background. Then he completely covers the canvas with acrylic paint before adding lines, scratches, and bands using various techniques (collage, spray-paint, graffiti...). The work is created as he goes along.
Text plays an important role in his work. Numbers, words, and phrases maintain a symbolic connection with change and ascension (ladder, stairs...) with which the artist combines man (woman and child). Between figuration and abstraction, his works reveal complex compositions in which the character is central. Beset by a profusion of details, his characters struggle to exist amid a forest of pattern.
