Dennis Gallardo

Even in his childhood in Santiago de Cuba, Dennis developed a passion for art and drawing. At the age of 5 he made his first creations for a school competition around the theme of cartoons.
This event awakened in him a passion for art, and he joined the Academy of Fine Arts at the age of 12 years for his secondary and higher education. In 1990 he graduated from the academy and was given the title of professional artist. He began teaching painting techniques and carrying out restoration work for the Catholic Church in several cities in the region. This contact with early art gradually allowed him to refine his personal technique. In 2004, he left the restoration work and became a freelance artist.
Dennis uses a mixed technique of oil paint, acrylic, pastel and photo collage. He works on both canvas and paper with great precision and attention to detail.
Dennis’ world is a mix of fiction and reality. Not having had the opportunity to travel and experience other cultures, he is inspired by photographs brought back by friends. He interprets them and creates an atmosphere between fantasy and reality.
Initially, he depicts a crude man in his unsuccessful attempts to control nature. Then, with a view to a different type of creation, he focuses on the similarities between humans and animals. He denounces "the vices of human beings, the sentiments and manipulations of a decadent society."
He is inspired by what he sees, the relationship between man and animal, and their similarities and differences. The artistic currents of Romanticism (nineteenth century) and Surrealism (twentieth century) influence his art. He also finds inspiration in the great painters such as Ivan Aivazovsky and William Turner (nineteenth century) for their use of light and Rene Magritte (twentieth century) for his peculiar work.
