Sophie Rocco

Sophie was born and raised in Paris. A lonely child on a difficult journey, she took refuge in painting and "doodling". She created her first painting at the age of 9. Her passion for art was affirmed during her adolescence, and she taught herself without any formal courses or workshops. Listening to the world around her, Sophie forged her universe through her taste for culture, travel and museum visits. Inspired by the artist Giovanni Righi (realistic contemporary painting) and René Pradez (semi-abstract contemporary painting), she learned different art techniques, from the oldest to the most modern. For many years, she carried out "odd jobs" (sales, creating travel books etc...), but at the age of 40 she began make a living with her art, exhibiting in France and abroad and became a professional artist. Sophie paints characters from which the viewer is unable to look away. She has always been fascinated by faces, which talk to her and are her preferred subjects. They occupy the space and colours of her paintings. She sets out a vision and the pain of the world in her work; a silent suffering. Her semi-abstract style suggests vagueness and indecision. These faces without eyes evoke fear and freedom, turning drama and tragedy into a modest beauty. She uses a mixed technique of acrylic paint, pigment, pastel, collage ... She draws the contours with mystery, adding power to her characters. Her travels (Italy, North Africa, United States, Asia ...) have inspired the use of ochre colours (red, light yellow) which are sometimes tinged with green. The painters Hubert Van Eyck (fourteenth century) and Francisco de Goya (eighteenth century) inspire her portrait work.
