Ten years ago, Daniel Castan exhibited for the first time in the Carré d'artistes galleries. From Bordeaux to Lyon, via Lille and Paris, his works find an audience passionate from the first hours by urban art ...

WHO ARE YOU ?

"My name is Daniel Castan and I have been a freelance painter for about fifteen years. I was formerly a freelance graphic designer, I worked in object design, it was a profession where I did not count my hours , I had very demanding clients and that required a very important commitment. From this first life as a graphic designer, I kept a work discipline, a taste for urgency and a passion for cities and art urban."

DANIEL CASTAN, WHEN DID YOU START PAINTING?

"Graduated in fine arts, it was only in my forties, after an existential crisis, that I finally decided to satisfy this need for creation. I first bought equipment, a palette, brushes then I tried. At the beginning it was clearly not that, but I had this urge to continue and not to give up everything so I insisted, I persevered and that's how it all started . After that it quickly became difficult to do anything else. "

THE MEETING BETWEEN DANIEL CASTAN AND CARRÉ D’ARTISTE ...

"By pure chance, I met Carré d'artistes, their galleries and the concept directly seduced me. I told myself that it was a great opportunity to develop my work as a painter and to evolve in this field. of urban art. Carré d'artistes then became my School of Fine Arts, allowing me to evolve every year during the many dedications in France and in Europe and to become the painter that I am today. it is thanks to this meeting that I became a painter."

WHAT ARE YOUR INSPIRATIONS?

"When I was asked to work on the theme of the urban, I brought out old photos of my former trips to different cities, especially New York and Hong Kong. Graphically it suited me, the verticalities, the The leaks, the disproportionate perspectives, there is a very graphic side to these two cities: the lines of the buildings are lost in the sky, the wide avenues seem endless and the colors collide.
Afterwards, I switched to a New York revisited, using oil paints. This is not a cut and paste of an avenue or a place, it is a mixture of all my feelings that I put on the canvas. I like it when it's suggested, that the viewer's gaze gets lost in the canvas a bit and lets his imagination run wild ... ". That's the advantage of oil painting!

WHY USE THE KNIFE IN YOUR PAINTINGS?

"The knife is my favorite tool. It allows me to work both in paste, in large strokes and to draw in the material. The choice to paint with a knife is not a coincidence, the knife does not leave no room for doubt. The painting leads me towards an abstract and refined representation without premeditation. "
