Carré d'artistes presents a large selection of sculptures of pop icons. The icons of popular culture have increasingly invaded the minds of collectors and art lovers. Contemporary artists have seized upon these emblematic subjects to divert and question them.

Jeff Koons or the icons of popular culture

The contemporary artist Jeff Koons, by developing his reflection around a neo-pop aesthetic with a very conceptual approach, has stirred up controversy and divisions. If his creations are always very eclectic, they most often represent world-renowned pop icons. Here, the art of pop icons pushes the spectators to contemplation, to the imagination and induces a sometimes ironic and shifted reflection on the current consumer society.

His sculptures of pop icons play with people or characters representative of pop culture with a provocative touch of kitsch (explosive colours, shiny materials, disproportionate volumes, etc.). Jeff Koons, for example, took a photograph of the famous Michael Jackson accompanied by his little monkey Bubbles. From this inspiration came the kitschy white and gold porcelain sculpture. The sculptures of pop icons allow the artist and contemporary art in general to question our place in today's consumer society. Above all, the art of pop icons pays homage to a popular culture nourished by idols and internationally recognised stars.

Pop Icon Sculpture

By using representations from popular culture, contemporary artists strongly criticize the pictorial and artistic tradition. By exploring the visual shortcomings of popular culture, the works created by the sculptors implicitly display a realistic and acerbic critique.

Icons are reproduced, copied, desecrated. The sculpture of this new genre removes the material from its context and sets the object aside. It becomes the only element for the viewer to contemplate. The use of icons in sculpture has the ultimate aim of criticising the sometimes elitist culture of art. These works offer the viewer a kind of discrepancy between what is represented and its ordinary and banal, even kitschy, elements. The majority of iconic works from popular culture provide an incongruous and unexpected vision.

This particular artistic genre is also considered one of the last modern sculptural movements.  Takashi Murakami also explores the major pictorial and sculptural trends in popular and elitist culture, both Japanese and Western. He has worked on a long series of paintings and sculptures that combine the strong Japanese symbolism of his artistic universe with the graphic codes of designer Virgil Abloh.
