"The phrase I use to sum up my work as an illustrator is: In praise of slowness".
Delphine Balme was born and grew up on the outskirts of Luberon, in Provence. She went to Paris as a student and studied at the Fine Arts School in Versailles. Then she took a degree in textile and graphic design at the Conte School. After graduating, she worked as a graphic designer in the press for 10 years. Software and layouts were part of her daily working life, but she missed paper and paintbrushes.\nBack in Provence, she started working with watercolours and India ink. The publishers First Editions and J'ai Lu commissioned her for book covers, and she also illustrated Lulu cards.
Delphine Balme describes herself as an illustrator. As a child, she already admired the illustrators whose work she saw in children's books. Today, she is skilfully following in the same tradition. In her studio filled with the plants and artists' illustrations that inspire her, she takes her inspiration from country landscapes or scenes from everyday life. Delphine draws each day and needs to take her time and to create in a peaceful environment. She applies this philosophy of silence and slowness, two key elements for her inspiration and personality. With her pencils and brushes, she gives her fertile imagination free rein to create a story with characters and backgrounds evoking peace and serenity, values that are dear to Delphine Balme's heart. Each of her works is an encounter with the gentle and poetic world of the artist.
