When I run out of blue, I use red - Pablo Picasso
Born in Tarbes in 1960, JP Bru is a self-taught painter whose career combines architecture, comic books, and art publishing. Since his first exhibition in 2015, he has developed a vibrant urban style of painting, inspired by his observations of everyday life. True to the idea that color takes precedence over constraint, he captures the city as a suspended moment, between solitude and movement, light and silence.
JP Bru's painting is part of a tradition of urban expressionism, between Edward Hopper, Gustave Caillebotte, and the narrative figuration of Monory and Fromanger. Armed with his smartphone, he captures fleeting scenes—café terraces, passersby—and turns them into intense compositions. Backlighting, reflections, transparencies, and colorful contrasts structure his canvases. He boldly works with complementary colors to recreate the luminous vibrancy of the city. His goal is to freeze the ephemeral and make the viewer want to dive back in, as if into a familiar scene that has become extraordinary.
