I like to think that the surfaces of the things have a soul, and i like to imagine that looking at my frameworks the eyes decide to lay exactly on those ripples of the materia.
Tras estudiar tecnología de la decoración en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Brera, esta artista milanesa comenzó su carrera aprendiendo a modelar superficies. Esta formación dejó una huella profunda y duradera en la obra de Gaia. Trabajando con arquitectos, diseñó muebles y paneles decorativos, antes de desarrollar su propio método de trabajo.
De aspecto abstracto, las creaciones de Gaia sumergen al espectador en el mundo de los sueños, más concretamente en esa frágil y nebulosa frontera entre el sueño y la vigilia, que podría denominarse "estado de semidespertar". Los temas que habitan y atormentan las composiciones están tomados en su mayoría de mitos y leyendas comúnmente conocidos -o simplemente extraídos del imaginario colectivo- para que puedan resonar en la mente inconsciente de cada individuo. Pequeñas figuras esculpidas, aparentemente suspendidas y emergiendo de la inmensidad del fondo...

Composed of many layers of paint combined with various materials – such as gold leaf, metal, resin or even cement - her two-dimensional works demonstrate that much care is given to how the paint is applied to the surface. Here the background plays a key role in the composition of the work: it gives it tone and its own atmosphere, an impression of something dreamlike. The subject, meanwhile, completes the whole piece, bringing with it that narrative element which is essential for overall coherence and harmony.
Inspired by surrealist poetry, the artist has developed a unique visual language; the title chosen for each work forms an integral part of it and this accentuates and emphasises that feeling of floating between reality and the world of dreams.
