I am constantly looking for new characters that are endearing enough to be the hero of a story found in nature.
Raphaële nació en una familia de veterinarios y creció rodeada de animales. En este entorno científico aprendió a amarlos y a observarlos atentamente. Combinando un agudo sentido de la observación y una pincelada segura, ingresó en la Escuela de Arte de Lyon para estudiar ilustración. Comenzó su carrera como ilustradora de libros infantiles. También participó en la creación de carteles de teatro, ilustraciones para revistas y tarjetas postales. Pero pronto descubrió que prefería expresarse en exposiciones de pintura más personales.
Combina el humor y la ligereza (que le vienen de su formación en ilustración) con un análisis caricaturista más agudo del reino animal, dando a sus series de animales una profundidad que va más allá de la mera ilustración. Su percepción del mundo, a menudo fuera de lo común, se refleja en la armonía de formas y colores que salpican el lienzo.
Raphaële focuses exclusively on the representation of the animal world that has always surrounded her. That is why she prefers painting with oil, which provides a wide range of colours and materials, bringing her paintings to life. She continues to recreate the world of her childhood through her colourful and plump animals.
To give texture to her paintings, Raphaële places flat glass beads ("Chinese marbles") in the animals’ eyes. With bulging eyes, these whimsical animals seem to observe us with irony ; a game of exchanging looks between the observer and the observed. These animal caricatures then become human caricatures, resembling us as they resemble the artist: at times funny, touching, lively, gentle...
