Coming from a modest background, Miguel de Sousa always knew he had two choices: factory work or painting. Even as a child, he was deeply moved by his discovery of Dalí and found in painting an outlet that school could hardly provide. Although his family did not approve of his artistic aspirations, he was determined to choose his own path. He then trained as a set designer and began to make a living from his talent. Fascinated by the dreamlike worlds of Chagall and Dalí, and by the bodies depicted in the paintings of Bacon and Schiele, Miguel began creating colorful and poetic works populated by eccentric characters. He hates routine and works whenever the mood strikes him, allowing himself detours into sculpture when he is no longer satisfied with his pictorial representations, and shifting from color to monochrome when he fears getting stuck. Self-taught, he has mastered numerous techniques, which he uses and blends as his inspiration dictates. His exploration of oil painting, watercolor, collage, and pencil gives his works a spark of life and a fascinating sense of movement.
