Abandoning the constraints of the subject, I put the gesture at the centre of everything.
After learning the ropes by taking up drawing, the French artist Geneviève Perez naturally evolved toward oil painting, which she fell in love with because of its touch, its finesse, its effect and its chromatic richness. First she developed a figurative approach and adopted different techniques, and began to explore different subjects, among which African figures. Then, adopting a more personal approach, she broached the urban landscape as a theme that placed her halfway between figuration and abstraction. Her series titled "Visions" therefore approaches the pure abstraction, emancipating once and for all from any ambition to represent.
Cities and metropolises emerge from Geneviève's canvas in an explosion of stains and colours. Suggested by vertical shapes, the landscapes seem sometimes to fold over into their own reflection. The fluidity and transparency of matter and the artist's sought after feeling of melting come to confuse the form and the function for a light and almost aerial effect. Suspended and floating, the artist's cities explore all chromatic scales and all possible formats. In this pursuit of emotion, only matter, colour, balance and movement count. Influenced by the work of Pierre Soulages, she multiplies black backgrounds and concentrates her use of the colour at the centre of the painting, like an eye, a window onto the world.
