Ensembles of symbols and geometric shapes, my paintings are enigmas that I offer up to the viewer’s own interpretation and imagination.
Freed from the constraints of classical painting, the Cuban artist Sissi Uria Dominguez has a new view of the relationship humans have with tradition, customs and folklore. Her colourful paintings with pop features explore the symbols of Hispanic culture, but also on a wider scale, the habits and customs of human beings, their social habits, their stereotypes and their uniqueness. With her portraits, the artist tries to understand the universal morals, the ways we discern our lives, our relationships with others, but also our dreams and religious beliefs.
Both unique and very eclectic at the same time, Sissi's practice borrows very different pictorial styles from the history of art: pop art, the American painting style from the 1950s, but also cubism with its geometry of shapes and blocks of colour, as well as Fauvism, with its exoticism and extravagance of shades. Drawing, an essential part of her process, then rigorously structures the composition. Effectively based on the conception of drawing and the expressiveness of colours, Sissi Uria Dominguez’s approach is on the look out for a new language, which mixes references and meanings in a large “papyrus” or “hieroglyphic”, in the artist’s own words.
