Women's duos

On the occasion of the International Women's Day, we wanted to bring together artists around 4-hands collaborations which are exclusively and resolutely feminine. These 21 artists chose to create together, according to their affinities, and experienced a real moment of sharing. Just like a fraternal bond, the tie that has been woven between these artists is that of sisterhood, united by their passion for art.

Also discover an interview where they share with us today their feelings on this unique experience and also their views on what it means to be a woman artist in 2023.

FEMALE PAINTERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

For a long time, the history of art was dominated by male artists, and the place of female painters was largely ignored, minimized or forgotten, at least until the 20th century. However, in recent decades there has been a growing recognition of the contribution of female artists to contemporary art.

Contemporary women artists began to emerge in the 1970s, as the feminist movement gained momentum. This allowed women to express themselves more in art and to challenge gender stereotypes. Since then, women painters have continued to play an important role in contemporary art, exploring a variety of themes, styles and techniques.

Why buy art from a woman painter?

Buying art by female artists can have several advantages and benefits:
  1. Promote gender equality: purchasing art by female artists supports their work and talent, while contributing to greater gender equality in the art world.
  2. Encourage diversity: choosing to collect art by female artists encourages a diversity of voices and perspectives in the art world, which can lead to a greater variety of styles and techniques.
  3. Valuing the work and talent of women artists: For centuries, women artists have been underrepresented in the art world. Buying their work gives them the recognition and visibility they deserve.
  4. Invest in the future: Buying art by women artists can also be a wise investment, as art history has shown that many women artists have had their work recognized by the public.

Artistic styles

Contemporary female painters use a variety of artistic styles, reflecting their diversity and creative individuality.

  1. Expressionism: Female painters may use expressionism to communicate intense emotions, feelings of despair, loneliness and vulnerability. Bright colors, abstract shapes and gestural brush strokes can be used to express intense feelings. This may also be referred to as abstract expressionism.
  2. Abstraction: Women painters may also work in the style of abstraction, using non-figurative colors and shapes to create images that focus on form, color and texture rather than figurative representation.
  3. Realism: Women painters may work in the style of realism, creating images that are true to reality with attention to detail. Realism can be used to represent historical or contemporary subjects, as well as realistic portraits.
  4. Street art: Women painters may also work in the street art style, creating graffiti, posters and murals to express social and political views or simply to bring color to public spaces.
  5. Pop art: Women painters can also work in the style of pop art, creating bold, colorful images that explore themes of popular culture and mass consumption.

The portraits of women

Who better to sketch a portrait of a pair than a woman? Paintings of women by women can be a way for artists to celebrate female identity, while exploring universal themes such as fragility, strength and vulnerability.
There is often a heightened sensitivity and understanding of the female experience. A female painter can create portraits that are more intimate and personal, reflecting their own experiences as women.

Portraits of women can also be used to explore issues of gender identity and the representation of women in art and society. Ultimately, these works can offer a unique perspective on the beauty and diversity of the female experience, as well as a reflection on universal issues of the human condition.
