Tribute to Egon Schiele
In this new collection entitled "Homage to Egon Schiele", Carré d'artistes, in collaboration with contemporary artists from around the world, is inspired by and honours the work of Egon Schiele.
The artist Egon Schiele
An Austrian painter born in 1890 in Tulln an der Donau and dying in 1918 in Vienna, Egon Schiele left his mark on his generation with his intimate, raw and innovative portraits. Despite his short career - he died of Spanish flu at the age of 28 - Schiele became one of the most recognised figures of Viennese modernism. Largely influenced by Gustav Klimt, he painted existence through distorted and disjointed bodies that convey the depth of human emotion and experience. His subjects are varied: men, women, self-portraits, landscapes and still lifes. He produced more than 3,000 drawings and paintings and tried his hand at painting in oil, watercolour, pencil or gouache. Some of his works were considered provocative and intense because of their sexual nature, and some of them were confiscated, and the artist spent several weeks in prison. Today, Schiele is recognised for his dense and plural work. He represents a generation of ambitious and innovative artists, and inspires a wave of young contemporary painters and visual artists.
