Mouis Cathy | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

Mouis Cathy

  • Painter / Plastician

I find inspiration in daily life, people, nature, animals, puppets... to capture the spectacle of everyday life with humour and derision.
As a child, Cathy spent most of her time with a pencil in hand to reproduce the drawings in comic books. The little girl was attracted to crafts. Curious and inventive, she had no time to be bored, and created all kinds of objects. After graduating with a high school degree in fine arts in Marseille, she went to Paris to pursue a career in illustration. Four years later, she moved to Montreal for a few years and worked on various projects for French and Canadian companies in the garment industry. Back in France, Cathy returned to the south. She has exhibited in art galleries and participated in exhibitions since 2003. She lives and works in the small village of Correns in the Var region. The countryside brings her the peace and quiet needed for her work as an artist. Cathy likes this return to a simple life, away from the bustle of big cities. Sensitive to beauty, she enjoys the aesthetic and sensory pleasures that the wonderful Provencal and Italian landscapes offer her
The artist works in relief using paint, paper and recycled materials. After having crumpled papier-mâché, she glues it onto cardboard and then paints it with acrylic. Her artistic sensitivity tends towards the sincerity and simplicity of Art Brut (Jean Dubuffet, twentieth century). Marginal artists like the Facteur Cheval touch her with their humility and unconventional genius. Her influences are many and varied. She enjoys the animation of Hayao Miyazaki (Japanese director), the surreal world of Jan Švankmajer (Czech director), stories and cartoons (Walt Disney). By their absurd attitudes and comical situations, her characters recall the squeaky clay figurines of Nick Park (Wallace and Gromit). Cheerful and charming, her funny characters emerge from their environment to meet the viewer.
