When I paint, I feel the true nature and the mystery of my models. I feel the images being born little by little under my fingers. I am in perfect harmony with their universe.
It was in the fifth year of high school, whilst choosing his general course that the Parisian Laurent Angeli decided to sit the entrance exams for a school of drawing. For three years, he familiarised himself with the fundamentals of painting at the school of Rue Madame (6th arrondissement), before specialising in graphic design during a year at the Gobelins school in Paris. Being the last born in a family of four brothers and one sister, he normally watched his father and one of his brothers draw. His father was a mason craftsman, who carved wood in his spare time, which later nourished his creation. Alongside his career as an independent graphic designer and art director in advertising agencies, he has always painted.
Laurent first painted in a hyperrealist style and with everything that came to hand (cans, household products, shoes, motorcycles, cars, etc.) Then he moved to self-portraits, portraits of his family and the views of Paris using oil. Indian ink and oil paint are his favourite mediums. Currently, he is preparing a big series of portraits of ‘the people in the street’ in black and white, in oil and on large size canvases (130 x 80 cm), and, at the same time, a series of drawings in Indian ink representing street scenes. ‘Street, people, life’ are, therefore, among the main themes of inspiration for Laurent Angeli, who claims to have multiple influences: the hyperrealist Chuck Close and David Parrish, but also Edward Hooper and Norman Rockwell.
