Paxal | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

Paxal

  • Painter / Sculptor

In nursery school, I painted a red sun. The teacher was not happy: "The sun is yellow! Start over!". Weird.
Paxal is passionate about graphic arts and has spent every day drawing since he was a child. "In order to feed [his] passion for lines and curves [he creates] graphic, playful and poetic drawings that have great spiritual significance." At age fifteen he signed up for an evening class at the Fine Arts School of Mulhouse before enrolling full-time the following year. After dedicating several years to creating art and to making artistic compositions in the field of advertisement and publishing, Paxal decided to return to the source of his passion and became a member of the House of Artists (Maison des Artistes) in 1999. Paxal's hybrid canvases are resolutely contemporary and serve as an invitation to travel and to contemplate a world in which the fantastic sublimates the real and the modern reveals the old world.
The Alsatian artist is eclectic and curious about everything, which has led him to feed his work with a myriad of references, mixing genres and periods and creating a kind of painting that confronts and interprets our history and our Western lifestyle. Paxal begins with acrylic paint that he applies directly to the empty canvas or on the glass of an old painting and then he lets his gestures move freely to tell a new story each time, directly from his imagination. Intensively figurative, graphic and colourful, his work represents a condensed collection of influences that live inside the artist, ranging from the world of comic books to Polynesian tattoos, including Aztec aesthetics, street art, the works of artists such as Picasso, and the Dutch painter Jérôme Bosch or even the Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
