WHY BUY A WATERCOLOR PAINTING?

Buying a watercolor art piece  can be a great decision for art lovers and aspiring artists. It adds a touch of elegance to your home while encouraging your creativity.

Watercolor is a technique that uses water and pigments to create soft, translucent color effects. Watercolor art is often prized for its natural beauty and ability to capture the essence of a landscape or scene.

HISTORY OF WATERCOLOR PAINTING

The origins of watercolor painting go back to the prehistoric era. Already, men mixed water with mineral pigments of natural origin to paint the walls of caves: you can see this heritage in the caves of Lascaux covered with animal representations.

This painting technique takes its roots in the Middle Ages when watercolor was used to teach the art of calligraphy and to illustrate historical frescoes. Albrecht Dürer, a German painter, is undoubtedly the watercolor artist who democratized the technique. His paintings "The Hare" and "A Pond in the Forest" demonstrate the concern for realism imposed by Humanism that this watercolor allows to highlight.

Professional watercolor artists have then multiplied the works related to botany. The particular tints offered by this painting allow for textured details and confer a unique depth to the canvas.

Today, contemporary artists interpret watercolor to sweep all styles of painting. Although landscape and illustration are widely represented, it is quite possible to discover paintings of an urban style.
Vassily Kandinsky's "First Abstract Watercolor" demonstrates that watercolor art is not limited to landscapes.

How is watercolor painting done?

Watercolor paint has the quality of drying quickly. Unlike oil paint, artists can stop and then resume the session. The fineness of the line and the watery softness of the paint allows the artists to obtain chromatic aspects in paintings. One thinks in particular of "Albrecht Dürer" by Turner which evokes a blurred landscape with an oppressive atmosphere.

The dilution capacity of a watercolor painting allows the artist to make alterations to his work, thanks to the evaporation of the water. But all the difficulty lies in the ability of the painter to measure the amount of water so as not to distort the pre-existing layers. The lightest colors must be applied first, so as not to risk masking them with a darker shade.

The pigments in suspension in the paint are particularly sensitive to light. Arabic gum as a binder in watercolor paints is recommended as incorporating it into the colors enhances their brilliance and durability.

Who are the great masters of watercolor paintings?

Many great artists have used the watercolor technique to create world-famous watercolor paintings. These include William Turner, John Singer Sargent, Paul Cézanne, Albrecht Dürer, John James Audubon, and Winslow Homer.

The works of these artists are still widely appreciated today for their beauty and expressiveness. Whether you are an aspiring artist or an art collector, watercolors are an excellent choice to bring a light and bright touch to your art collection.
