Who is Sam Guillermot ?

- 23/03/2021

WHO IS SAM GUILLEMOT ?

1.    Introduce yourself in a few words? What is your background?

I am 49 years old; I live in the Parisian region and I have been the Chief camera operator for the past 25 years, but I’ve been drawing since my childhood.

2.    How did your vocation as an artist emerge?

My vocation as an artist came along rather late, even though I have been drawing and painting since my childhood. After having discovered street art around ten years ago and the influence of my work as the Chief operator in terms of light, it encouraged me to explore portrait in a more detailed manner.

3.    How does a painting session take place? What is the process of creation for one of your works?

Once I have selected a photo on which I wish to lean on, I begin to design the background, made up of newspapers and magazines. I like to create a link between articles and the subject but also establish a relationship, even though at times, once the work is over, we can’t see the articles anymore.

4.    What are your artistic inspirations, your influences, and references?

Since my childhood, I have been a fan of comics, I have a rather versatile taste. I have always been fascinated by the accuracy of lines. I really admire Enki Bilal’s work but also his bleak and fascinating atmosphere. I am also very influenced by the street art scene, which is a major source of inspiration (Martin Watson, Seaty1, Noé2, Jef Aérosol, Graffmatt and many more)

5.  How do you relate with the themes that are highlighted in your artwork?

I like it when the faces I paint express an emotion and manage to intrigue the spectator, through the intensity of a look.

6.  What do the colors you use signify? Do you wish to convey a message?

I mostly use black and white, which I find quite intense while working on the light of the faces. I use colors for the background, to create an atmosphere or strengthen a contrast.

7.  What is the best advise you’ve received as an artist?

Go for it and work bigger formats.

8.  Can you tell us something about yourself that people may be surprised to learn?

I am color-blind so I am always a little apprehensive while choosing my colors.

9.   An anecdote you would like to share?

Apart from my profession, I have worked during several sports events. This way, I was able to present portraits to Nadal, Djokovic and Federer among others, and they were kind enough to autograph these.
