Martin Laurent
"Painting is a journey into itself, into the depths; it is exploring a story."
An Occitan artist, humble and passionate, Laurent discovered painting at a young age, fascinated by the work of his grandfather, a watercolorist. Filled with emotions, he remembers how he depicted his loved ones with refinement. Art became for him a way to express his feelings and illustrate slices of life. In parallel with a career in the industrial world, he never stopped training in workshops and evening classes. After several solo and group exhibitions in the south of France, Laurent joined a gallery in Sommières in 2021 and now lives by his vocation.
With sensitivity and elegance, Laurent explores in his paintings the richness and complexity of urban life. Depicted as a character with a thousand faces, the city is sometimes sullen, sometimes joyful, bubbling with activity or serene calm. Every day, each life, each destiny, each story evokes in him a facet of this chimerical protagonist, to whom we all belong and whose portrait he makes. In his studio, the artist uses oil paint and knives and works from photographs. He takes the time to make several sketches and plays with colors to best evoke the emotions released by these slices of life taken on the spot. Laurent admires Berthe Morisot's vivid and powerful touch, Joaquin Sorolla's mastery of atmosphere and light, as well as the very intimate and intense works of Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud.
