Brief history of the mixed technique

According to the facts recognized to this day, it was at the beginning of the 20th century that artists tried to mix different materials and supports. This initiative gave new life to art. From then on, they succeeded in revisiting the world of painting and ornament. In painting, the mixed technique is referred to when coloured matter is combined with heterogeneous materials or binders (at least two) of different nature. Famous 20th century movements such as the Surrealists and the Dadaists were influenced by these surprising works of art.

Famous mixed media ornaments

Victor Brauner, a famous sculptor, used the assemblage process to mount his works. Some modellers, such as Charles Cordier, like to combine bronze, ivory, lapis lazuli, marble, onyx, porphyry and enamel. The variations obtained are infinitely numerous. In 1851, he was appointed "ethnographic sculptor of the natural museum of Paris. One of his most famous mixed technique sculptures is "The Old Fisherman", known as "Seneca Dying", 183 cm high, which is on display in the Louvre Museum. It is made of alabaster and black marble.

When mixed technique meets sculpture, the result is exceptional!

In ancient art, the term "mixed technique" is used to describe a work of art in which two or more materials are used. These materials take shape through special skills. The mixture of materials and skills creates unique and original composite works.

The choice of materials

There are many different materials to choose from. They vary according to the needs and expectations of the artist. Indeed, they are chosen according to the artistic approach of the latter. It should be noted that the materials will change exceptionally from one work to another. While some prefer bronze in all its states (patinated, gilded and ivory), others swear by polychrome plaster and marble.
