De Wolff Bernard | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

De Wolff Bernard
  • Netherlands (the)
A self-taught artist, Bernard divides his time between Amsterdam, Paris and South America. The artist has painted since childhood and exhibited for the first time in The Hague in 1982. His artistic life was marked by his encounter with Hans Min (Dutch artist) in the 1980s. During their studies, the two friends painted and exhibited together in the Netherlands.\n After he earned a degree in art history, Bernard worked for a time on video projects, but in 1991, he decided to devote his life to his passion. He participates in numerous exhibitions and lectures on painting in the United States, and travels the world (South America, Africa ...). He built a house in Paramaribo (Suriname) where he lives six months of the year. Yet the exotic charm of the South American capital has little influence on his work. The artist prefers the sombre atmosphere and canals of his homeland.\n In 1998 his career as a painter took off. Today his works are exhibited in several countries (Netherlands, United States, Germany, France, Brazil, Russia, Japan...). Bernard’s art is a mixture of modern (George Hendrik Breitner, Dutch painter, nineteenth and twentieth centuries) and contemporary (Eugène Leroy and Karel Appel, Dutch and French painters, twentieth and twenty-first centuries) influences. The artist admires many of the art masters: Titian (Italian painter, sixteenth century), Rembrandt (Dutch painter, seventeenth century), Francisco de Goya (Spanish painter, nineteenth century) and Pierre Bonnard (French painter, nineteenth and twentieth centuries). He appreciates the impressionism of Claude Monet (French painter, nineteenth and twentieth centuries) for his mastery and understanding of light. Foremost a figurative painter, Bernard prefers to represent moments of everyday life (urban scenery, cows, nudes ...). For him, art is not intended to convey a political or sociological message. It should touch us universally through simple and concrete things. Technique and the result are more important to him than the subject represented. Fascinated by the brilliance and depth of oil painting, he makes very bold use of the material. Thick strokes of colour completely cover the canvas in a joyful ""symphony"" of tones.
