Delphes | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

From an early age, Delphes was interested in drawing and the arts. She practiced dance, drama and singing, which were all ways for her to express herself. Naturally, she turned to the study of Fine Arts but didn’t dare exhibit and instead took on a string of odd jobs to live. Her husband and an artist friend encouraged her and eventually managed to convince her to exhibit for the first time in the Provencal art markets. With her success she became known and was immediately asked to participate in exhibits.\nAfter trialling several techniques, Delphi chose acrylic, which she appreciates for its fast drying time. She paints on paper because she loves the feeling of smoothness that this medium offers, but for larger formats, the artist paints on canvas.\nDelphes’ favourite subject undoubtedly remains the human being. While there are some landscapes scattered throughout her work, characters are her preference. She is interested in the representation of women or men and the perfect symbiosis they form around a child. In a world full of colour, Delphes paints a round woman, blossoming and sensual; an alter ego, a kind of goddess protected in a temple of intimacy. This character has the distinction of having only one eye, inviting the viewer to think about the other present in all of us.\nDelphes draws her characters from her entourage. Much gentleness and tenderness emerges and she seeks to convey some of the atmosphere in which she finds herself: the sweetness of family life.\nThe events of her private life inspire her work. A mother above all, the artist feels the need to celebrate love. Her children have an influence on her paintings: they constantly develop her creativity. She therefore exerts her need for artistic expression through means other than painting (the creation of paper mobiles for example). This mode of expression continues to transmit the lightness and freedom characteristic of Delphes’ universe.\n
