Monique Chrétien | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

Monique Chrétien
  • France
Monique has been passionate about drawing since she was very young. Her childhood in Normandy saw the birth of her first artistic feelings. The little girl quickly understood the interest of creating to escape into a magical world full of possibilities. As she grew up, she reconciled her professional activities with the practice of drawing and painting. But she secretly yearned for more freedom. The need to paint became omnipresent. \In 1972, Monique decided to devote herself entirely to creation. She left Paris, where she had worked for some time, for the warmth of the south. She settled in Arles and then in Aix-en-Provence, the city of light. She took some courses in private workshops and worked relentlessly. Monique strengthened her technical knowledge at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts for three years. Her teachers encourage her to persevere in this way. The artist became more confident. She is determined to make a living from her passion. She opened a studio and taught art for ten years. The year 2000 marks the takeoff of her artistic career. She participated in her first exhibitions. Monique now lives in a small village in the Hautes-Alpes. She exhibits in the south of France and abroad. \If the artist masters a great number of techniques (watercolor, pastel, ink, acrylic), her preference tends towards oil painting. She has a great admiration for the masters of Impressionism and the French painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries: Édouard Monet, Eugène Boudin, Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard. \Monique finds her inspiration in her homeland, Provence. Her subjects are rich and varied (still lifes, portraits, landscapes...) The search for simplicity is at the heart of her work. The artist begins by painting her subject on the ground. Then, she reworks it in the calm of her studio in order to avoid unnecessary details and to concentrate on the essential. Through her figurative paintings, Monique wishes to retranscribe the emotion felt by the intense contrasts of light of her homeland.
