Abstract seaside painting is a great choice for interior design, especially if you're looking to bring a touch of modernity and sophistication to your space.

An abstract seaside painting can be a beautiful addition to a nature-inspired room or a contemporary-style living room.

Abstract seaside painting often uses a bold, bright color palette, such as the deep blue of the ocean or the light green of seaweed, to create dynamic and energizing compositions.

By incorporating an abstract seaside painting into your interior design, you can create an eye-catching focal point that draws the eye and brings a refreshing marine vibe to your space.

History of marine painting

The history of marine painting begins in prehistoric times, where boats were already represented on walls, and then on containers during the time of ancient Greece. The Middle Ages represented the sea in painting when it was necessary for a religious narrative: it was not therefore a separate artistic genre.

It was Flemish painting, from the 16th century onwards, that gave this genre its first letters of nobility. Panoramic views of large bodies of water appear. Ships emerge from the water and begin to fill the sea with their large white sails. But it is really the Dutch 17th century that is considered the golden age of sea paintings.
The paintings of naval battles are numerous and impressive. There are also scenes of calm rivers. The history of famous shipwrecks is also told through painting. The XVIIIth century continued on this path. It is the time of great military actions. Marine painting followed this movement, although in Venice, for example, the canals and the peaceful gondolas of the city were readily represented.

In the 19th century, the genre continued and evolved with the schools of its time. The impressionists blurred the landscape, the romantics brought a touch of mysticism to the water, etc. Beach scenes also appeared.

The artists alternated successively between dark and troubled representations, and calm representations of the sea. In the 20th century, the genre did not disappear but lost some of its nobility. Nevertheless, marine views remain important and many modern and contemporary artists represent the sea in painting.

Famous painters in love with the sea

It is mainly between the 17th and 19th centuries that we find the most famous painters of the sea. Before this period, we think of Pieter Brueghel the elder, who painted paintings of the sea in addition to scenes of peasant life. Claude Gellée, known as the Lorrain, is a French painter known for his port views, such as Port de mer au soleil couchant (1639).

In the same way, Canaletto painted panoramic marine views of Venice. Later, the French painter Claude Joseph Vernet is famous for his marine paintings. In England, William Turner is one of the great representatives of this genre. The 19th century also had its leaders, such as Géricault and his famous Raft of the Medusa (1819), or Monet, thanks to the superb Impression Sunrise (1872). On the other side of the globe, but no less famous, the iconic Great Wave of Kanagawa by Hokusai (1831), proves that the sea is an essential element in the painting of all times and all countries.

At Carré d'artistes, discover contemporary paintings of sea views and seascapes, by artists such as Eric Munsch, Franck Hébert, Bruno Klein, Nicole Ortis-Bommarito and others.
