Raw art sculpture for sale:

Carré d'artistes presents you a large selection of sculptures art singulier. It is difficult, if not impossible, to try to define or classify under the same identity works which are by essence singular. However, the rejection of traditions, the mixing of genres and the use of unexpected materials remain key elements of this movement.

What is singular art?

Singular art works are generally made by self-taught artists. They are created with unexpected materials and are free of any artistic influences or traditions. This crude way of conceiving allows for the uncovering of singular modes of representation and figuration. The French artist Jean Dubuffet is the initiator of the concept of Art Brut or Art Singulier. In the 1940s, he initiated the creation of a collection of objects made by residents of psychiatric hospitals.

All these creative examples, outside the codes of the art world, opened the way for a marginal artistic approach. The works are the results of free experiments far from any constraints exerted by society or tradition. He spoke of "a pure, raw artistic operation, reinvented in all its phases by its author, based solely on his own impulses". Since its appearance in the early 1970s, singular art has transformed itself from a marginal movement into a popular one.

A genre apart from the codes of contemporary art

The sculptures of this special genre are defined by an avant-garde spirit. These works do not conform to any particular style or previous movement. This genre should not be confused with naive art. The so-called naive artists are inspired by known and recognized movements, whereas the artists of the singular movement prefer to break the traditional codes and move away from the artistic trends. The works are raw and strong in emotion. For Jean Dubuffet, they embody a true transgression of artistic and pictorial codes and of art history in general.

Singular art is an integral part of the contemporary artistic landscape, and occupies a primordial place of its own. The works produced by this movement are unique, singular and specific to each artist. They are selected because they do not fit into any classification or identification. These sculptures cannot fit into a dictionary box or be subjected to a global and common definition.
This movement emerged at the end of the Second World War and still has a long way to go. Its origin also ensures its longevity. If in the middle of the 1940s, this art was misunderstood, it is nowadays displayed in front of the artistic scene in galleries all over the world.

At Carré d'artistes, discover figurines, objects and sculptures of singular art by talented contemporary artists.
