What is singular art?

The French artist Jean Dubuffet is the initiator of the concept of Art Brut or Art Singulier. In the 1940s, he initiated the creation of a collection of objects made by residents of psychiatric hospitals.

The works are the results of free experiments far from any constraints exerted by society or tradition. He spoke of "a pure, raw artistic operation, reinvented in all its phases by its author, based solely on his own impulses". Since its appearance in the early 1970s, singular art has transformed itself from a marginal movement into a popular one.
 

A genre apart from the codes of contemporary art

The so-called naive artists are inspired by known and recognized movements, whereas the artists of the singular movement prefer to break the traditional codes and move away from the artistic trends.
