Leslie Xuereb | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Joan Miró and many other twentieth century European artists in New York’s museums accompanied Leslie’s American childhood. An early fascination for these masterpieces was the source of her own vocation. Impatient to also express herself through colour, Leslie decided early on to become an artist. Her gestures, perfected in various printing workshops during the 1980s, were fed with solid academic knowledge. From Boston (United States) to Paris (France), including Jerusalem (Israel), her studies of art history were a cultural foundation on which her sensitivity flourished.\n Every studio resembles the artist who expresses himself there. Installed in Chartres, in the heart of Beauce region (Eure-et-Loir), Leslie’s studio is warm. It is filled with images, colours and engraving tools: chisels, points, inks, brass, paper, etc.. Her graphic and thematic research prompts her to explore multiple materials such as wood, linoleum or polystyrene. She creates simple shapes that she colours with a varied palette before printing on paper. Embracing a true pictorial approach, she complements this printing by painting objects as diverse as bottles, doors, seals or garden borders.\n In this way Leslie mixes genres with relish. The profusion of her works reflects her hard work. The artist is always seeking inner beauty, hidden in the heart of her subjects. Inspired by biblical, mythological and historical narratives, her work is populated by mythical creatures: plump deities rub elbows with poets, mermaids, Christs and animals with reinvented forms.
