Robert’s career has always been linked to artistic creation. He was still a young boy when he moved from his rocking horse straight to a drawing desk. After studying at the prestigious art schools of Paris, the artist settled as a ceramist in the early 80s. Notably, some of his pieces were acquired by the National Museum of Ceramics in Sèvres (Hauts-de-Seine). However, painting reappeared in the creative world of the artist, who decided to devote himself to it in 2000.\n In each of his paintings, Robert captures a fresh and humanist story. Then he invites the viewer to imagine the rest. His goal is to express a particular emotion, an intimate state of being: a mixture of humour and sadness, halfway between dream and reality, between shadow and light. The artist reflects on the difference in culture, the things that we love and those that we can never really grasp. He depicts with poetry the ambiguity of everyday experiences.\n From his workshop in Dieulefit (Drôme), Robert showcases characters often accompanied by an animal, a bird, a fish, a horse, etc.. Through this work, the artist reflects on time and space, two fundamental concepts related to each moment of life. The presence of a bird, for example, expresses transience, the ability to fly and disappear into the distance. Robert also attaches importance to gestures. Painting being silent, he uses the characters’ stances to communicate their thoughts. The men and women he represents slide over the surface of the canvas and seem for a moment to suspend their movement for an instant to share their question with the viewer.
