Zoltan | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

Zoltan
  • France
Fascinated by drawing from a young age, Zoltan studied Fine Arts at the Saint-Luc Institute in Tournai, Belgium. He sold his first work, an ink drawing, in the port of Lavandou in 2000. The artist has exhibited in bars and restaurants in the Lille region and Belgium since 2002.\n In 2004, with his illustration degree in his back pocket, he began his career in graphic design. From 2005 to 2006, he went to live on the island of Reunion, where he created characters for the Zoorit ad agency (advertising campaign for the Caisse d’Epargne Bank) and participated in various graphics projects for Pardon Creation (an international ready to wear brand from Reunion). Back in France, he decided to devote himself entirely to his artistic career, and has exhibited permanently in Lille since 2010.\n Zoltan draws his inspiration from scenes of daily life (bars, musicians ...) and the memories of his travels (Reunion and Asia). In 2012, he developed a project of intercontinental travel throughout Europe and Asia (Pacifi'Karavane).\n Marked by urban and contemporary art, his style reveals a graphic design steeped in the tradition of cartoonists and comics writers such as Nicolas de Crécy (The Old Lady and the Pigeons, 1998) and Sylvain Chaumet (The Triplets of Belleville, 2003) .\n The artist focuses on recycling and raw materials. He works on salvaged media (cartons, newspapers, stamps, old envelopes...) A ballpoint pen, coffee grounds and some pigments are enough to breathe life into his colourful scenes. Acrylic and watercolour on which he applies a varnish enhance his drawings. The ochre filter thus created is reminiscent of old sepia photographs.\n His quirky characters evolve in a retro universe where the caustic and cosy atmosphere is rooted in the aesthetics of the 50’s and of films of Pedro Almodóvar.
