Jazzu | Contemporary Artist: Artworks & Biography

Jazzu
  • France
If the artist reveals himself only in his paintings, then Jazzu is the perfect expression of it. Self-taught, he has a career as a social worker (educator with deaf children) and expresses in his painting his anxieties, his fears, his refusals, his revolts of yesterday and today, born from his direct confrontation with society. No fuss, no posture, no false vanity, no pretension, nothing prepared or convoluted, his work is made of instincts and emotions. He paints as he breathes, giving strength to his themes and models captured on the spot in an alchemy of colors driven by the need to translate his time, cultural or political news. He claims the influence of Miro, Baselitz, Basquiat, Soulage, Combas, as many masters who share or have shared like him this noble and furious desire to be happy with their brushes and their paint bombs... He thus remains faithful to the maxim of the New Yorker Basquiat who said: "I don't think about art when I work. Like his illustrious predecessors, his painting is raw in the primitive sense of the act with skeletal characters and faces resembling masks, but it can also be sensual with its large flat tints of color, its portraits that translate the strength and power of life. He paints with acrylic and spray paint. And it is the Art Brut which allowed him to express his overflow of energy. He started his career modestly by exhibiting in restaurants in Toulouse before being spotted by a gallery in Barcelona. Today he has permanent exhibitions in Hong Kong, Gaillac (Toulouse), Deauville and Paris.\nJazzu still lives in Toulouse, his native city, a baroque city if ever there was one, where people like to party, and where more than anywhere else they know how to celebrate the present moment, as brief as it is fragile. \n
