Why give a travel painting?

Travel is a theme that has inspired many artists throughout history. It is therefore not surprising that contemporary painters still exploit it to create magnificent works. The journey is not only a geographical one, around the planet.

It can also correspond to a peregrination in time and through the ages, or to a journey in our inner world. Common to all its meanings: movement, but also the courage to leave a known and reassuring place. Travel paintings convey all kinds of emotions. They are therefore excellent gifts for your family or friends.

PAINTINGS ABOUT TRAVEL, A FERTILE GROUND OF IMAGINATION FOR ARTISTS

The journey crosses the styles and periods of art history. It is particularly conducive to feeding the imagination of artists. Throughout history, many themes related to travel and exoticism have inspired them.

  • Italy and the Grand Tour. Travel to Italy took off in the seventeenth century, thanks to the creation of the Académie de France, located in Rome. It became fashionable in the eighteenth century, with the Grand Tour, a journey of initiation made by many artists, writers, collectors and art lovers. The objective of this trip was to discover archaeological sites (Pompeii or Herculaneum), ancient works, and those of the masters of the Italian Renaissance.

Souvenirs of this famous Grand Tour, urban panoramas of Italian cities are particularly sought after by travelers, and especially by British amateurs. Painters such as Volaire or Canaletto became famous for their countless views of Vesuvius or Venice. Others like to represent landscapes of the Mediterranean, such as Cecile Colombo.

  • Orientalism. The Orient became during the nineteenth century a crucial issue in the politics of European powers. The colonial expansion following Napoleon's campaigns in Egypt, the collapse of the great Ottoman Empire, or the French expedition of 1830 in Algeria, favored a renewed interest in these lands still unknown to Westerners.

Several painters and writers undertook trips to this distant East to bring back images and scenes that were conducive to artistic creation. Orientalist paintings illustrate a certain Western vision of the Orient, which mixes romantic and fantastical representation with ethnographic study. Many of the travel-themed paintings on our site relate to this movement. For example, this portrait of Istraille, entitled VARUN.

  • Japonism. From the second half of the nineteenth century, Japanese art is in vogue in Europe. This situation is strongly linked to the political and economic opening of Japan, until then completely closed to the West. A treaty of friendship and trade was signed with France in 1958.

In the wake of the two universal exhibitions in London in 1867 and Paris in 1878, Japanese art aroused a real passion and influenced writers and artists. This was the birth of "Japonism", a trend that crossed the painting of the time and gave a new lease of life to all decorative arts. For example, this marine view by Julien Rey, entitled Voyage.

Whether you are attracted by Japanese art or orientalism, by Africa or the landscapes of Italy, you can be sure that artists have created works of art. Travel is therefore a very fertile ground for the imagination of painters. The above themes continue to inspire painters' works of art to this day.

A way to dream and discover the world

The journey is not only a simple movement in space. We believe that its meaning is deeper. We can travel with our senses and get a change of scenery by staying in the same place, admiring a painting or a film, or reading a book.

Art has the power to make us discover unknown countries and to make us travel. Thanks to the power of a work of art, you can travel to distant countries in Africa or smell the perfumes of the Orient.

You can also travel through time and walk the cobblestone streets of ancient Rome or admire the hanging gardens of Babylon. Art also allows us to discover ourselves.

As the Roman philosopher Seneca said, "What is the use of traveling if you take yourself with you? It is of soul that one must change, not of climate". Without a plane ticket or train ticket, art can transport us to places we would never have dreamed of going in the depths of our soul, thanks to the multiple emotions it provokes in us.
