Nude sculptures

Carré d'artistes presents a wide selection of nude sculptures. This artistic genre consists of representing completely naked bodies.

The idea of the nude

According to traditional principles, sculpted nudes are not stripped of artifice and are often adorned with sheets and fabrics. These elements make it possible to highlight movement and twists of the body. What is particularly attractive about the artistic genre of the nude is that it emphasises a subtle art of suggestion, transparencies of forms through accessories and materials. The anatomy of the human body is highlighted. Nude sculpture is one of the oldest genres, but it was not really recognized by the art world until the 20th century. One of the first nudes to be known worldwide is certainly the "Venus of Willendorf", made during the Upper Palaeolithic era, around 24,000 BC. The plump shape, the belly and the prominent chest are an allegorical representation of femininity. This nude is undoubtedly the symbol of fertility. This nude sculpture breaks away from the codes of reality. Sculpting nudes has been widespread practice in the various countries of Europe and the Middle East. A certain ideal of beauty would be developed with the nudes by Greek sculptors. It is from the 6th century BC that the representations of gods, victorious figures and other athletes became the favourite themes of sculptors. The nude took on monumental forms and bore witness to the codes of beauty of each era. Sculpted bodies would cry out with reality and beauty in all their twists in the rigid marble. They are very realistic representations of the attitudes and beauty of the time.

From antiquity to the present day

During antiquity, the art of the nude was copied from hand to hand in a primarily decorative role. Nude sculptures almost disappeared because of the influence of the Christian religion. The Italian Renaissance revived nude sculpture from its ashes and put it on a pedestal. The nude became the sacred point which combined beauty, body and creation in all its splendour. Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, David most often relied on mythological subjects and explored the anatomy of the bodies they studied in depth. Nude sculptures are among the most recognized works in Western art. From David to Camille Claudel and Rodin, from Louise Bourgeois, Alberto Giacometti and Niki de Saint-Phalle to Ron Mueck, nude art in all its forms and works is a profound expression of emotion and movement. Nude sculpture not only represents what we see but goes far beyond, showing us the torsion of movement and beauty. At Carré d'artistes, discover nude sculptures by contemporary artists: Agnès Descamps, Liselotte Andersen, Aude Silve…
