Haelyn Y

Originally from South Korea, since a very young age Haelyn has been interested in the creative arts and, in particular, in the practice of painting. Leaving aside her artistic ardour, the Korean education system channelled her into following an advanced course in geology. It was only when she emigrated to the USA for family reasons that Haelyn decided to re-dedicate herself to her childhood passion. To this end she took various instruction at the universities of Hawaii and Portland, giving her knowledge and skill.

Nowadays she has settled in Portland with her family, so the artist works with perspicacity and devotion on the development of her production of pictures. Haelyn always does her sketches in charcoal, whereas she does her painting exclusively in oil and acrylic. With the nourishment of her research and instruction her technique is to a large extent inspired by classicism, particularly in terms of work with chiaroscuro and the use of frosting. Starting with this relatively traditional structure, the painter then constructs her composition around a deliberate choice of bright colours associated with numerous impasto, which she works with a gesture that is at once expressive and contemporary.

Haelyn takes infinite pleasure in her figurative works, which she sees as windows reflecting the interior, her thoughts and her emotions. Between past and present the artist studies individual and collective memory relationships, which are an integral part of the life story of every human being. Never ceasing to experiment with the aim of capturing the changes of a time in constant evolution, Haelyn draws faces and portraits that seem to call for a materialised transcription that is sensitive to fragments of memories, moments that are immortalised on canvas.
